The aims of this conference, organised jointly by the Research Centre for Comparative History of Religious Orders (FOVOG) at the Catholic University Eichstätt, the History Department at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and the Research Project “Institutional Structures of religious Orders in the Middle Ages” in the Collaborative Research Center 537 “Institutionality and Historicity” in Dresden, are to study the medieval monastery as symbolic interactive space. The transitory nature of organised religious life and the segregation from the secular world represent some of the shared features of the medieval religious experience. Despite these common aspects religious groups created separate identities by developing and using their own specific forms of ritual and symbolism. These differences need to be highlighted by exploring, analysing and comparing a range of characteristics. This is a vast field which extends into different disciplines. The idea is to compare structures, regions, orders or individual houses. Papers are to focus on case studies in the following three areas in order to identify structural parallels and differences:

1.) the symbolic content and meaning of normative texts

2.) the symbolic presentation of spiritual ideals and forms of organisation

3.) symbolism in the representation of the past with a view to establishing separate identities.
